Our infant program supports the individual needs of the child. We incorporate programming that allows for staff to encourage independence and present fundamental foundations for this age group. Areas of creative, sensory, gross and fine motor, French as well as group time are planned for each and every day along with the daily christian curriculum.

Our program is designed to create a solid base of learning for each child in our care. Simple developmental milestones are repeated in order for the skills to be mastered. For example, the skill of imitation is described by the ELECT document as “imitating adult behavior and taking part in pretend play with simple scenarios” (ELECT, Page 24). Our staff create opportunities for the infants to master this skill by singing songs with actions, caring for dolls in dramatic area and modeling the action as well as encouraging the imitation through verbal direction.

Outdoor play is a large aspect of our program. We provide the infants with a soft rubber surface to explore their environment in a comfortable and safe way. We have a gradual admission to our infant class, to provide the parents and child the opportunity to build a relationship and trust in the staff of the program.

Children in the toddler program are starting to develop independence and strong personalities. The joys of the toddler program is the output that you receive from children in this age group. They are moving more, and thrilled to see the world! They are excited to learn, and staff of the room are constantly labeling items in the classroom to support memory, and language development. Our toddler program allows for small group sizes and large learning opportunities. Independence and social cues is a large part of the toddler program.

Expressive language and understanding individual needs begins in this classroom and the teachers take great care in supporting this age group through these milestones. Autonomy is a large domain (skill) that we work on at ATCD. ELECT labels autonomy as “initiating activities, setting own goals and persisting in achieving them (and) distinguishing own intended actions from unintended ones” (ELECT, Page 37). Our staff encourage this skill by providing open ended materials, such as a block area with a variety of sizes , in order for the child to make conscious decisions on creating a solid base for their building. Teachers also act as play partners in supporting learning, so when the building falls they can help the child problem solve, “Lets try building with the large blocks first and see if it stays up!”. In order to get the toddler ready for preschool, we introduce potty learning at 2 years, and have toddlers successful in underwear before moving up to the preschool room.

In preschool we focus on collaboration and working together for a common goal. This developmental milestone will pave the way for children to start managing their feelings and take ownership of play! Our preschool staff set out and organized areas of the classroom to encourage this skill to develop. With consistent exposure to turn taking, collaborative play and problem solving, teachers are able to talk with the children and create meaningful connections to support their understanding of how things work. Did you know that fine motor lacing activities are academic skills? It is called a pre-writing skill and children need to master small muscle movement in order to be able to hold a pencil and have control for printing!

While it is tricky to see the tangible learning that is taking place, the biggest goal we have in preschool is to support children in questioning, collecting and organizing information and reflecting and reaching conclusions (ELECT , Page 53) . Our staff are trained to support that level of learning by planning activities that include sorting, matching sets of objects and talking about learning! Teachers support this by asking open-ended questions such as, “How did you figure that out?”, giving the children opportunities to think critically - providing meaning to their play.

We are committed to supporting families in their decision to keep children in private care for JK and SK. The benefits of this include: longer operating hours, fresh meals and smaller class sizes. We follow ELECT as well as the Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum model. The smaller class size allows our staff to focus on each individual child and make a plan to support their learning.

The program is created to foster a love of learning through play activities. We create graphs, understand dimensional objects, identify patterns, using spatial relations for terms such as forward, backwards, next. The kids might create a map of the daycare; using their memory and identifying directions. Children are able to learn the most by having meaningful conversations with peers and teachers about it. Academic skills are found in the most wonderful version of play. Sharing this learning with the parents is a favorite aspect of our day. We upload images and explanations of activities throughout the week so parents can be a part of their child’s learning and growth. The students have the opportunity to learn French during the week, providing a wonderful foundation should you pursue french immersion in the future.

Our program is dedicated to the development of children in school with age-appropriate, educational and stimulating activities that develop their skills to further their growth in all areas such as math, science, literacy and creativity. The school-age programs in our daycares are offered before and after school during the academic year, full days for PA days (at selected locations).
